omegas for your skin and soul

When it comes to looking after your skin, it’s important to look after it from the outside and in. Anyone who knows me well, will be aware that aside from running a natural & organic skincare business, my other great passion is food and I love to cook. It’s what I do to relax and my favourite room in my home is my kitchen. I’m no health food junkie – I don’t follow diets, I don’t restrict or cut out any food groups from my diet. I love butter, cream and cheese and I also love wine. But I also enjoy fresh fruit, vegetables, oily fish and I also drink plenty of water every day.

If you want great looking skin then a good skincare routine is just part of the picture. A balanced diet combined with a great skincare routine can really help improve our skin’s appearance as well as improve our sense of wellbeing and lift our mood and when you feel good about yourself, you look better too.

So I’m going to be writing a few posts about how you can feed your skin from the outside and in – starting with good old Omegas.

Omega 3 and 6 (also known as Essential Fatty Acids) are great for our skin, body and our bones. Many people take Omega 3 and 6 supplements but we should also be eating a diet rich in these Essential Fatty Acid as well as looking for natural skincare products that are rich in these oils.

Oily fish like mackerel, sardines, tuna and salmon are great sources of these all important Omegas. They also taste delicious and are so versatile. But it’s not just fish – vegetable oils such as Avocado and Sunflower are also rich in Omegas as are dark green leafy vegetables such as Kale, Cavalo Nero and Savoy - the perfect replacement for fish if you are vegetarian or vegan.

When it comes to natural skincare, look for products that contain Rosehip, Chia Seed, Kiwi Seed, Thistle (also known as Safflower), Borage, Evening Primrose.

But as well as eating them, we should also look out for natural and organic skin care products that contain these Essential Fatty Acids as they can really benefit our skin – keeping it looking and feeling in great condition.

Oils high in Omega 3 and 6 are used as emollients in skincare formulas. These soften and soothe the skin, and help reduce dryness and scaly skin. They can also help improve a number of skin care concerns – improving circulation, decreasing the size of pores; they can also improve skin disorders such as eczema & psoriasis as well as help treat acne.

Many of these oils also tend to be thin & dry so they are quickly absorbed by the skin and can therefore be used in natural & organic skincare products for oily and combination skins – (but they are also equally good for dry, mature and normal skin types).

Perhaps one of the best known oils used in organic and natural skincare formulas is organic Rosehip Oil. It is widely used and when you look at the benefits it has on our skin, it’s no surprise that it is one of the most popular oils used in natural & organic formulations. Rosehip is one of the best vegetable oil sources of Omega 3 but also contains high levels of Omega 6 – so is excellent for regenerating our skin. It is also very versatile – helping to improve and treat everything from sun burnt skin through to improving the appearance of skin that is dull and damaged.

Organic Argan Oil is rich in Omega 6 and helps to keep our skin soft, supple and elastic. It has good regeneration properties and brilliant for treating damaged skin which is why you’ll find it in Rest & Regenerate night balm and Repair & Renew face oils amongst other products. It is also an oil that is used in cooking in Morocco. It has a strong, delicious and nutty taste. Not only will it keep your taste buds satisfied, but your skin will also benefit from introducing it into your delicious fresh and well cooked dishes.
